Voters in Pennsylvania did reelect the late state Rep. Tony DeLuca in Tuesday’s midterm elections even though the 85-year-old Democrat died of cancer Oct. 9. But accusations that it suggested shoddy elections or cheating misrepresent the situation. State law stipulates that substitutes, in the case of the death of a candidate, cannot be submitted after ballots have started printing — late September, in this case. A special election will be held to fill his seat.

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff says Russia's announced retreat from Kherson in southern Ukraine and a potential stalemate in fighting over the winter could provide both countries an opportunity to negotiate peace. Army Gen. Mark Milley says “well over 100,000 Russian soldiers" have been killed or wounded, with similar figures on the Ukrainian side. He says as many as 40,000 Ukrainian civilians have been killed. Milley made the remarks at The Economic Club of New York on Wednesday.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Democrat U.S. Rep. Mary Peltola was leading in first-choice votes in preliminary returns from Tuesday’s election, with over 200,000 ballots counted and thousands still left to be tallied.

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Computer glitches in reporting, including the votes cast for write-in candidates, apparently are delaying completed Kentucky vote tallies.

DETROIT — A retired miner accused of leaving pipe bombs and threatening letters across northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula was sentenced to more than six years in federal prison Wednesday in a case that raised fears of an imminent domestic terror attack.

A decisive victory swept progressive Democrat Summer Lee into history, with her victory in Pennsylvania's newly drawn 12th Congressional District making her the first Black woman to represent the state in the U.S. House.

ORLANDO, Fla. — Before beating the Mavericks, 94-87, on Wednesday night, Orlando Magic coach Jamahl Mosley gave his young defenders a detailed game plan:

The Warriors’ broadcast crew will look a little different when the team hosts the Spurs Monday night at Chase Center.

Brazil’s defense ministry has released a report highlighting flaws in electoral systems and proposing improvements. But it contains nothing to substantiate claims of fraud from some of President Jair Bolsonaro’s supporters protesting his Oct. 30 defeat. The report released Wednesday is the first comment by the military on the runoff election, which has drawn protests nationwide even as the transition has begun for President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s inauguration Jan. 1. Bolsonaro supporters have gathred outside military installations across Brazil calling for intervention by the armed forces to keep him in office. Bolsonaro's less than two-point loss was the narrowest margin since Brazil’s 1985 return to democracy, but he hasn’t specifically cried foul in the election.

An embattled western Michigan library targeted by residents opposed to LGBTQ materials on its shelves has lost most of its funding with the latest failure of the renewal of a property tax millage. The Patmos Library in Jamestown Township outside Grand Rapids will lose 84% of its $245,000 annual budget after the millage renewal was defeated in Tuesday’s general election. Unofficial results provided by the Ottawa County Clerk’s Office show nearly 56% of voters rejected the 10-year millage proposal. It also lost in the August primary amid a campaign against LGBTQ materials in the library’s stacks.

Enoch Cheeks scored 20 points as Robert Morris beat Pittsburgh-Greensburg 84-49. Cheeks was 8 of 9 shooting (4 for 5 from distance) for the Colonials (1-1). Josh Corbin scored 12 points, shooting 4 for 8 from beyond the arc, and Jackson Last finished with 10 points. JoJo France had 23 points and six rebounds for the Bobcats (0-1). Robert Morris hosts West Virginia Wesleyan next Wednesday.

Alyssa Ustby had 19 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, Kennedy Todd-Williams scored 20 points and grabbed nine boards and No. 12 North Carolina defeated Jackson State 91-59 in the season opener for both teams. Paulina Paris and Eva Hodgson added 13 points each for the Tar Heels, who shot 58% from the field — while limiting the Lady Tigers to 34% shooting, and scored 22 points off 20 Jackson State turnovers, including 16 UNC steals. Jariyah Covington led Jackson State with 19 points.

The Braves are bringing Kolby Allard back to their organization, reacquiring him in a trade Wednesday that sent pitcher Jake Odorizzi and cash to the Texas Rangers.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — By a wide margin, Alaskans firmly rejected a ballot measure asking whether Alaska should hold a constitutional convention, according to preliminary election results.
